MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man accused of shooting at Memphis Police officers downtown on the 4th of July was arrested on Tuesday in Frayser.

Police say Victor Peeler, 22, was taken into custody by the MPD Fugitive Unit, MGU, and the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force in the 800 block of Dawn Cove.

Peeler was charged with 12 counts of Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder and Reckless Endangerment.

According to MPD, they used the Downtown Command Center surveillance cameras to identify Peeler as the shooter.

“This individual showed a complete disregard for human life and the safety of our officers and community,” said MPD Chief CJ Davis. “Thanks to our partnership with the U.S. Marshals, a violent fugitive is now in custody. These collaborations are essential in building a Stronger, Safer Memphis.”

On July 4, officers on foot responded to an armed party call with an extended magazine near Rufus Thomas Boulevard and Peabody Place after learning about several individuals involved in an argument around 1:50 a.m.

The officers reportedly became caught up in the chaos.

When officers arrived at the scene, they say they began to hear shots and saw a man get into a dark-colored Nissan with a woman driver. When the man got into the getaway car, police say they saw a muzzle flash followed by shots being fired from that vehicle as it drove away.

“There were numerous shots that were fired with numerous shell casings that were found,” said Samuel Hines, Memphis Police Deputy Chief. “Those shots appeared to be directed at the officers.”

“We’re looking obviously for those individuals,” said Deputy Chief Samuel Hines. “We have good video.”

Memphis Police say the vehicle used in the incident, a black Nissan Juke, was last seen heading east on Peabody Place.

Police allege that the passenger in the vehicle fired several shots at the officers.

No officers were reported injured.

That passenger was later identified as Victor Peeler. An arrest warrant was issued for Peeler on July 5.
