MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Officers with the Downtown Memphis command center say that their new location is working to help fight crime.

A newly released video shows Memphis Police officers “dodging bullets” in a downtown shooting on the 4th of July.

“That is Victor Peeler, as they are leaving the scene, he starts shooting at our officers,” said an officer at the downtown command center.

That is just one of the several videos coming from the new downtown police command center that has helped police identify people involved. They hope it will lead to the suspect.

“It turns out he is a prolific offender at Tillman Station,” said the officer.

The command center said that they are producing enough information to help them make 11 felony and 10 misdemeanor arrests since April.

Christopher Criswell was seen driving downtown backwards on a one-way street, and now there’s an active warrant out for his arrest.

MPD said this is not the first time he has been in trouble.

“Back in 2003, I began arresting him for aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, auto theft. Cristopher Criswell is a prolific offender. He is a crime driver and he is also an armed career criminal,” said the command center.

Criswell’s lime-green SUV has been seized since.

Officers say identifying criminal suspects is easier because video quality is so clear it’s like watching a movie.

They are advocating for more “high-tech” camera access.

“Obviously, we have hundreds of cameras in this area, but we still need more, and if we can get better participation from our business partners, that would be extremely huge,” said the officer.

Memphis Police say while this crime-fighting command center has been effective, it does not replace having more personnel.

The department is looking for more recruits as its fight continues to make Memphis safer.
