WYNNE, Ark. — One man was killed and at least nine people were injured after a shooting at a block party in Wynne, Arkansas.

At around 10 p.m. on Saturday night, shots were fired at a block party near the corner of Williams Avenue and Martin Luther King Street.

The Arkansas State Police identified the deceased victim as 27-year-old Wynne resident, Varian Campbell. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The deceased was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, where the manner and cause of death will be determined.

Lucille Lockett says she and Campbell had been dating and living together for more than a year, and she was waiting for him to call her.

“I woke up about four something, look on my phone. He hadn’t called so I instantly got on Facebook. People said it was a mass shooting. Girl said it was a block party,” Lockett said. “She was like Varian Campbell and someone else. I just keep calling and calling. I still don’t believe it. I would do anything for my boyfriend to be back alive.”

The other victims have not been identified by police but included both men and women, with ages ranging from 24 to 49. Two victims were run over by vehicles at the scene.

Alfreddie Neal is best friends with Campbell’s father. He says he saw the initial argument before the shooting. He says it did not involve Campbell.

“One guy said something to the other guy and it just went sour,” Neal said. “Guy started shooting and I saw my best friend’s son. I’m looking at him, and they were trying to get him back.”

Victims were transported to St. Bernards CrossRidge Community Hospital in Wynne, Forrest City Medical Center, and hospitals in Jonesboro and Memphis.

One victim was transported by helicopter to the Regional One Health Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis. Authorities believe additional injured individuals may have been transported to hospitals in private vehicles.

The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident at the request of the Wynne Police Department. Investigators have identified multiple people of interest and encourage anyone with information about the incident to call Troop D at (870) 970-6082.
