Caregiver accused of stealing $82k in jewelry from couple

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman has been arrested after what the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office calls a jewelry heist in Cordova.

Corine Mukes, 22, has been charged with theft of property valued between $60,000 and $250,000 and financial exploitation of an elderly person.


According to SCSO, deputies responded to a theft on Spruce Grove Lane on Tuesday. The victim reportedly told deputies that seven pieces of jewelry had gone missing from the home.

The jewelry was estimated at $82,025. SCSO says the victim believed that the thefts began on the 4th of July.

SCSO says that detectives identified the suspect as a caregiver who had been working for a local in-home care company. The suspect had reportedly been hired to take care of the victim’s elderly parents.

SCSO says that detectives learned that the suspect had pawned jewelry at various Cash America locations. Detectives reportedly recovered some of the missing jewelry at the Cash America shops.

Detectives found the suspect’s address and executed a search warrant at a home on North Watkins. SCSO says detectives found more stolen jewelry and other items that belonged to the victim.

According to SCSO, the detectives found the suspect, identified as Mukes, hiding inside the home. SCSO says Mukes was arrested without incident.

Mukes is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail on a $40,000 bond.
