MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two men were arrested Monday after police say they ran through a red light, crashed into a car and fled from officers.

The Memphis Police Department said that around 2:15 p.m. on Monday, officers saw a maroon Nissan Maxima speeding on Millbranch Road from Holmes Road.

Officers said they tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. They did not chase the vehicle.

Shortly afterward, officers in the area of Elvis Presley Boulevard and East Holmes Road saw the same vehicle run through a red light, nearly crashing into multiple cars. The car continued speeding east on Holmes toward Millbranch.

Police said the Nissan then crashed into a black Chevrolet SUV at the intersection before stopping in the middle of the road.

“They hit the person just next to me and sailed through the intersection and hit a power pole or a street light and ended up sitting next to a police officer,” said Brandon Turner. “Thank God I heard it and slowed down and avoided the collision. I was in a work truck.”

The suspects were identified by police as James Martin and Daylan Evans. Martin, the driver, and Evans, the passenger, allegedly exited the car and ran from the crash site.

Martin, 22, was taken into custody immediately.

He is now facing a long list of charges, including Evading Arrest in Auto and on foot, Reckless Driving, being a convicted felon in possession of firearms, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, and Possession of Marijuana with Intent.

Officers in the area found Evans, 19, hiding in a dumpster behind a shopping center on East Holmes Road. He was charged with Evading Arrest on Foot.

A woman was taken to an area hospital in non-critical condition following the crash. Martin and Daylan were also transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

When officers searched the vehicle, they found a stolen AR-style pistol on the driver’s seat and another gun on the floorboard under the seat. Over one pound of marijuana was also located in the car.

Police said Evans claimed everything in the vehicle belonged to Martin, and Martin admitted to having the two guns and the marijuana. The license plates on the vehicle were not on file, and Martin did not have insurance.

In 2021, Martin was convicted in DeSoto County, Miss., of being in possession of a stolen firearm. He received four years of probation but was wanted on several warrants at the time of his arrest for aggravated assault, theft, and harassment.

Reports say Evans also had a warrant for his arrest for theft of property $10,000-$60,000.

Their bonds have not been set, but they are both scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.
