MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A pregnant woman was beaten in her own apartment after a group of people broke into her home, Memphis Police say.

On Feb. 25 officers responded to the assault at the Whispering Pines Apartments at 2326 Dwight Road at 11 p.m. The victim told police she heard a knock at her door, then five people came into her apartment through an unlocked door.

The woman said the group began asking for her cousin, but when she told them he was not at the apartment, one of the women in the group allegedly stated, “Since we can’t get to him, we’ll get you.”

Police say the group then began assaulting the woman by hitting her in the head as Herbert Howard, 35, stood by and threatened her. Once they were done assaulting her, the group left the apartment.

The victim told police she was 36 weeks pregnant at the time of the assault and identified Howard as one of the people involved.

Howard was taken into custody on Monday and charged with Aggravated Burglary and Assault. His bond has not been set but he is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.

Court records also show Jamia Howard, 19, was taken into custody on Feb. 26 and released on a $5,000 bond. She is facing the same charges as Herbert Howard. Her mugshot is not available.
