MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An attempted car theft turned into a shooting overnight at a sports bar in Midtown, according to the Memphis Police Department.
Officers say they were called to a shooting at TJ Mulligan’s at 2021 Madison Avenue just before midnight.
When police arrived, they checked the inside and outside the building and did not locate anybody injured.
A woman who was a witness told the victim, a security guard, that four men were attempting to break into a gray Dodge Charger.
The woman said one suspect advised her “not to snitch.”
The security guard said he saw them wearing all black and ski masks, attempting to break into the vehicle.
The four men fired several shots at the victim after he yelled in their direction, and he told police the shots sounded like a high-caliber firearm.
The victim said he fired twice at the suspects but did not know if it struck any of the suspects, and they fled in a black Infiniti with a temporary tag.
MPD recovered the victim’s Glock with one round in the chamber and several rounds in the black magazine.
According to MPD, they located a bullet hole in the mirror on the driver’s side of the victim’s 2019 Chevy Suburban.
A male witness told police he saw the shooting and witnessed the men fleeing the scene eastbound on Madison Avenue.
He said he saw two men running from the business and fleeing the scene in a white car westbound on Madison Avenue.
The city’s crime data map shows 19 incidents reported in the 2000 block of Madison since Jan. 1, including a robbery, an aggravated assault and two motor vehicle thefts.
Back in February, two people were left injured after a shooting at the sports bar. Officers say video footage from the bar showed the suspect leaving the restroom and handing the unknown suspect an object, possibly a firearm, before the incident at the bar escalated. The object was seen on camera being used to strike the victim.
A week before the incident in February, police say they were called to TJ Mulligan’s parking lot on Houston Levee regarding an incident.
