UPDATE: The teen is now recovering at home after being in the ICU since last Friday. A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover costs for medical expenses and things she will need.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 15-year-old girl was shot in the jaw late Thursday night in what may be an accidental shooting, police say.

Police said several friends were hanging out at a house on Letrec Cove in Frayser around 10:30 p.m.

According to the victim, a male suspect set his handgun on a bed, and the gun discharged, hitting the girl. The suspect then ran off, police said.

A relative identified the 15-year-old girl as Kennedy Gilmore.

She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

At this time, authorities are unclear of what caused the weapon to go off, but they have confirmed they issued a warrant for the suspect that owned the gun.

Garrett Jones, a father of two boys, says he considers himself to be a responsible gun owner. Gun safety and making sure his kids are properly educated about the tools are a priority in his household.

He was disheartened to learn a child was shot just a few blocks away from his home.

“You shouldn’t have a gun lying around a child anyway. Period,” Jones said.

Witnesses told police the person who owns the gun lives in the neighborhood, but officers were unable to find him.

“It starts at home. Everything starts at home,” Jones said. “I don’t leave my gun lying around. I got locks on them.”
