MEMPHIS, Tenn.– A 15-year-old girl is back home from the hospital after she was shot in the jaw at a home in Frayser, and 22-year-old Lorenzo Davis has been arrested for the shooting.
On July 24, Candace Pegues, the victim’s aunt, said she received a frantic call about her 15-year-old niece, Kennedy Gilmore.
Memphis Police say the suspect’s gun discharged while he was showing it to the victim and other minors.
“The only thing that crossed my mind was getting to the hospital,” said Pegues.
A bullet shattered Gilmore’s jawbone, and she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
She is home now, after spending days in the hospital recovering from surgery.
“She’s on a liquid only diet. She’s doing liquid, using a syringe because of the swelling in the wire. So once the swelling goes down, she can do a straw. She likes to jog out of a straw last night, so she’s progressing with that, and the swelling went down a lot,” Pegues said.
The gunman, who’s accused of leaving the home after the shooting, was arrested this week after investigators say he spent days on the run.
Pegues said, “It’s a relief. We are very grateful for the news stations, you all and other stations that we’ve contacted because had it not been for the news stations, the media, this wouldn’t even be posted.”
Davis faces several charges in connection to the shooting, as well as charges that stem from a warrant for a different criminal case.
As Gilmore continues to recover, her aunt told WREG that this situation has changed her perspective on guns.
“I feel like the laws should be stricter than what they are. To be honest, I was one of the ones that felt like we all needed guns,” she said.
“The laws were fine, but when it happened to a family member or a child, you look at it from a different side.”
Gilmore will need several more surgeries, so her family has created a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses.
