MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police need your help identifying two people responsible for popping fireworks inside a gas station, just feet away from an employee.

This happened at an Exxon in North Memphis.

As the search continues for the suspects, WREG spoke to community members about this latest act of vandalism.

Saturday, Memphis Police said a fire was sparked by fireworks at an Exxon in the 600 block of Chelsea Avenue.

Surveillance video showed the fireworks bouncing off the store clerk’s shirt before they landed on the floor and exploded.

The store clerk and customers were not injured.

However, investigators are looking for two suspects.

“I think they probably should have hung around and apologized or something,” a resident said. “And it’s an accident, things happen.”

Police said the suspects were shown on video, coming in and out of the business and pacing by the door.

One person is accused of standing watch at the front door, while another person threw the fireworks behind the counter.

“I just think it’s just a shame. These people in Memphis, they know better,” Marlando Rooks said. “They should do better and have a better understanding of protecting the community. You know? People go to the store every day.”

Police said the suspects ran away from the gas station and took off in an unknown vehicle.

With fireworks still being used during the Fourth of July weekend, community members want people to be careful with them.

Especially when it comes to children.

An 11-year-old boy is recovering tonight after Memphis Police said a cherry bomb firework exploded in his hand on Saturday afternoon.

“Just be responsible and be careful with it,” a resident said. “And try not to burn down a gas station.”
