MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A STEM Academy is welcoming students as young as two years old.

Fostering the love of learning is the idea behind the ‘Smart STEM’ Academy, located in South Memphis.

The future students, as young as two, will soon head into the classrooms.

“I am the founder and director of Smart STEM Academy,” said Founder Simeria Green of Smart STEM Academy.

“It is called Successful Minds Academy Reflecting Top Tier – that is what the ‘Smart’ is for,” said Founder Green.

According to Executive Director Crystal Tuggle of Memphis Delta Prep Charter School, getting kids inside the classroom at an early age offers a strong educational footing.

“How do you come to kindergarten unprepared, but pre-K and Headstart really help to prepare students with the letter recognition, number recognition, those foundations that they need to be successful in kindergarten,” said Executive Director Tuggle.

Memphis Delta Prep Charter School will be sharing space with Smart STEM.

Tuggle said the room called the busy bees will house the 2-year-old class.

“Yes, the snuggle bunnies is going to be three to five-year-old student,” said Tuggle.

“And over here is going to be Jr. kindergarten, and that is the class that is partnering with Porter Leath for Early Head Start,” said Tuggle.

Everything that’s gone into making early education available to those as young as 2 was well-thought-out.

Green said that all of this creates the building blocks to success.

“They can be great for life, I want this longevity, so not just education, I’ll be teaching them how to be good citizens and how to serve,” said Green.

“We’re going to be successful,” said Green.

Not only are scholarships available, but a donor, WREG learned, has pledged to pay 30% of the tuition for a year for those parents who pay out of pocket.

There are also state vouchers set to be used, and Porter Leath is awarding 20 free spots.
