MEMPHIS — Nolan Smith is changing his stripes.

Trading in one set of tigers for another.

Smith is now the new head coach at Tennessee State in Nashville. The move becoming official on Friday with TSU announcing its new coach.

The former Duke All-American landing his first head coaching job after one year on Penny Hardaway’s staff. Yes, that means another season where Hardaway has to not only rebuild his roster but revamp his coaching staff as well.

Smith takes over at Tennessee State another Penny, Brian ‘Penny’ Collins, who resigned at TSU to take a job on Tuomas Iisalo’s staff with the Memphis Grizzlies.

“If anyone is deserving of this position, it’s Nolan. He is prepared and ready for the job,” Hardaway said in a statement released by TSU. “Nolan’s time at Memphis was short but he made a huge impact on our program. I’m very confident he will do the same at TSU.”
