MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some drivers in Memphis ventured out during the “Bitter Blast” Friday, pleasantly surprised to find clear roadways.
Officials want to remind drivers a seemingly clear road does not necessarily mean perfect conditions.
Winds and cold temperatures mean some surfaces are ripe to refreeze.
“We’ve been fortunate in the Memphis metro area,” said City of Memphis Public Works Director Robert Knecht.
Many Memphis streets were quick to clear Friday.
Knecht said a high ground temperature helped.
Still, that does not mean Memphis is out of the woods yet.
“There’s a chance that as it continues to keep getting wet, that it will dilute it to the point where it won’t be effective and as the cold temperature remains. It’ll freeze again,” Knecht said.
His trucks have already deposited salt and sand to help melt the snow, but cold temperatures and howling winds can turn that water into ice.
Bridges, ramps and overpasses are at greatest risk of refreezing.
Memphis driver Adrienne Meeks said refreezing is a major concern.
“Yes, and the temperature is dropping, so yes, and I have to work tomorrow, so I hope it doesn’t do that,” she told WREG.
TDOT is also readying for a possible refreeze on highways and interstates.
“There’s probably going to be some slick spots overnight, and we will have people out monitoring those spots,” said TDOT Supervisor Ed Johnson.
Knecht said Public Works has a full complement of trucks on the roads through tonight.
That is approximately 16 trucks.
“We’ll, again, have to go through there and retreat it again,” Knecht said.
Then, Public Works might possibly scale back crews if Memphis roads stay clear.
