Test results show 1 in 4 MSCS students meet, exceed TCAP expectations

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Just under 25% of students in Memphis-Shelby County Schools met or exceeded expectations in the state TCAP tests this year, according to data released by the state Tuesday.

That means 75% of the 105,000 students in the district did not meet expectations, although 45% came close.

The numbers are nearly identical to 2024, but represent some improvement over 2021 TCAP results.

The Tennessee Department of Education released the results statewide for the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program tests, which include both fall 2024 end-of-course exams and spring 2025 exams in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.

In Collierville, by comparison, 70% of the district’s 9,200 students met or exceeded expectations. The percentage was the same for Germantown’s 5,900 students, and for Arlington’s 4,500 students.

MSCS sent a response to the the data Tuesday:

“For the 4th year in a row, greatness continues to grow at Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), and the latest TCAP results reflect that progress. Overall proficiency rates in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies improved, with mathematics showing notable gains across all grade bands. These encouraging results highlight the hard work of our students, the district’s focused investment in rigorous instruction, and data-driven support. This momentum signals a district on the rise, where student achievement is steadily taking root.” — MSCS
