MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Researchers said the medicines that would have usually killed head lice are not working anymore.

The mutant head bugs have been dubbed “super lice.”

Lice are a nuisance for many families, and these bugs may be harder to kill. Super lice, as they are being called, are resistant to common over-the-counter treatments.

A recent study revealed the species was found in several states, including Tennessee and Arkansas.

Doctors at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital have not seen any cases of super lice.

The hospital told WREG parents should not be alarmed because lice do not carry diseases.

Dr. Jason Yaun said over-the-counter medications should remain parents’ first line of defense.

“I believe that they’re worth the try,” Yaun said. “Now if you’ve done that and have not successfully eradicated the lice, then I would recommend you visit your pediatrician and discuss it with them. You may need a prescription medication.”
