MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Soulsville residents are calling for violence to end after a man was shot to death over the weekend.

Around 8:15 p.m., Saturday night, there were flashing police lights and crime scene tape as detectives investigated the shooting of an 18-year-old man at College Street and Ferry Court.

The shooting victim later died.

A Soulsville resident initially planned to visit the park Saturday night.

He said he had heard about a gathering, but decided to stay home.

“I stayed on the porch and I heard some gunshots. That’s all I know. Then somebody come back and told me someone got shot round there,” the resident said.

This latest incident comes just weeks and less than half a mile away from a shooting inside well known nonprofit Memphis Rox; the spot designed to be a safe haven offering resources to the neighborhood.

The incident claimed the life of two men, one of them an employee, Jarmond Johnson.

Investigators say those involved in that shooting knew each other and had an argument.

According to the City of Memphis’ online crime database, so far this year there have been 24 murders that fall in the Crump Police Precinct area.

That’s down slightly compared to 28 this time last year and down significantly more than the year before, but those in the neighborhood believe there’s more to be done.

“I don’t know what it’s going to take to make things better, but somebody need to do something. That’s all I gotta say,” the resident stated.
