MEMPHIS, Tenn. — School is officially in session at Collierville High School; however, they encountered a few obstacles when driving to the front entrance.

Construction projects and road closures in front of the school caused some confusion for those dropping off their kids.

“Yea, it is a little inconvenient, but you know it’s just a matter of planning,” said a grandfather dropping off his grandson at school.

A portion of Shelby Drive between Collierville High and Highway 72 is closed until later this year while TDOT continues its road widening project.

Sycamore Road north of Shelby Drive is also closed until August 11th due to a separate project.

“Hey, we got to just do it for the time anyway,” stated a woman dropping a student off.

The Collierville School District says it is anticipating that the closures will increase traffic in the area and possibly cause delays.

To reduce congestion, juniors and seniors attended class in person on Thursday, while freshmen and sophomores attended class virtually.

On Friday, school district officials say the roles will be reversed.

Freshmen and sophomores will be in the class, and seniors and juniors will be virtual.

Parents dropping off their students on Thursday say the staggered start schedule made the morning commute less hectic.

“This morning it wasn’t too bad, but they only have the seniors and the juniors here today. So, I don’t know how it’ll be going forward,” said another woman.

For students with extracurricular practices, they are expected to attend practice on both days, regardless of their in-person attendance schedule.
