Former escapee pleads guilty to attempted murder, gets 50 years

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man who escaped from the DeSoto County courthouse last year has pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder and is being sentenced to 50 years.

On June 14, Zimmerman escaped from the DeSoto County courthouse after being scheduled for a hearing in a case where he was facing an attempted murder charge.

Assistant D.A. and lead prosecutor, Gordon Shaw said Zimmerman stated in an interview with investigators, “I shoot to kill.”

“People don’t usually hear the first gunshot. I muffled the first, I didn’t want to alert the neighbors,” said Zimmerman.

“I waited on the victim for approximately an hour to die before taking him to the hospital,” Zimmerman said.

Shaw said the victim involved in the case is still alive.

Zimmerman was on the run for two months, until U.S. Marshals found him Chicago, Illinois and re-arrested him in August 2024.

District Attorney Matthew Barton said Zimmerman is facing a murder charge after a pregnant woman was killed in Texas.

“Whether you’re important or home grown, and you come down here to do your dirt, we are going to put our hands on you,” said Seth Kern, Chief of Police of Southaven.

“And we are going to bring you back and hold you accountable,” said Kern.

Zimmerman is currently being held in federal custody and is awaiting sentencing.
