CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) – The superintendent of the Canton Public School District announced he has accepted a new job in Memphis.

Superintendent Gary Hannah said in a Facebook post Thursday he was resigning from the Canton district and had accepted the position of chief of staff for the Memphis-Shelby County Schools.

“After careful consideration and prayer, I have accepted the position of chief of staff for the Memphis-Shelby County Schools. This decision allows me to be closer to home and spend more time with my family,” he wrote.

According to his LinkedIn page, Hannah was previously deputy superintendent in Marshall County, Mississippi and was principal of Hillcrest High School.

According to a posting for the MSCS job, the chief of staff is “Responsible for the district’s communications strategy in addition to supporting the Superintendent on the district’s long-term planning and strategy as well as its day-to-day operations.” 

The Canton Public School District has about 3,200 students. MSCS serves 110,000.
