MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is fighting for his life after an overnight shooting downtown, Memphis Police said.
At 11:34 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call with property struck in the 200 block of Union Ave.
A male victim was taken by private vehicle to the hospital in critical condition.
Police said an MPD squad car was also struck by gunfire, but no officers were injured.
According to preliminary information, the victim and suspect were known to each other.
A tourist who was visiting from Missouri told WREG that he was outside his hotel room when he heard the commotion.
“Out of nowhere, we heard half a dozen to ten rounds go off kinda off in the distance, and looked over and it almost kinda sounds like fireworks,” he said.
But he quickly realized it was a shooting.
“And while those shots were going off, you could actually hear ricochets,” he said. “You could literally hear bullets flying off metal, or you don’t know what they’re flying off, but you could hear the bullets ricocheting.”
While left surprised by what he witnessed, he told WREG the violence won’t stop his family from visiting in the future.
“We come down here to eat some of the world’s best barbeque and usually like going up to BB King’s and listening to some good music,” he said.
At this time, no one has been detained.
