MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is in police custody after she allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from a Memphis non-profit.

On April 28, the interim executive director of Memphis Rox, a climbing gym in the Soulsville area, filed a report with the Memphis Police Department.

He told officers that an internal audit allegedly showed that one of the non-profit’s employees, Roshaunda Burwell, had been paying her personal credit cards and MLGW bills with the non-profit’s First Horizon account without authorization between January 2022 and April 2025.

Burwell was in charge of the non-profit’s finances.

Investigators obtained records from American Express, Chase and MLGW, which showed that Burwell had used the non-profit’s bank account to pay $37,290.95 to American Express, $180,180.10 to Chase and $5,732 to MLGW (totaling $223,203.05).

Burwell has been charged with theft of property $60,000-$250,000.

She was released on bond and is set to stand before a judge on Monday.

Memphis Rox is the same place where two people were killed in a shooting Sunday afternoon. One person is detained.

It is not known whether there is any connection between the two incidents.
