MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Remains of an Arkansas man who went missing in 2022 were found on a remote island in the Mississippi River Sunday night, according to the Desha County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said the remains were discovered Sunday by a family docked on the island on the north end of Desha County, Arkansas, near Snow Lake.

Deputies said due to severe weather, they were unable to search the river until Monday.

On Monday, deputies with the Desha County Sheriff’s Office, Desha County Criminal Investigations Division, the Desha County Coroner, Arkansas Game & Fish, Mississippi Wildlife & Fisheries, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol launched boats to investigate the remains discovered on the remote island.

According to reports, they recovered bones and clothes in the sand, and they also found a wallet buried near the remains.

Investigators say the remains were of a Mississippi County, Arkansas, man who went missing in 2022, and the man was reportedly last seen in Kennett, Missouri.

The Desha County Criminal Investigation Division and the coroner’s office are working with investigators in Mississippi County and Kennett, Missouri, to investigate the events leading up to the remains.

The sheriff’s office says they will not be releasing the name of the man until the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory can identify him.

The man’s family has been contacted by investigators. This is an ongoing investigation.
