MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man convicted of kidnapping and murdering nursing student Holly Bobo is asking for a new trial after a key witness in the case recanted his testimony, according to court documents.
In 2017, Zach Adams was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus fifty years for first-degree murder, especially aggravated kidnapping and rape. Adams was denied a new trial in 2020.
Adams’ brother, Dylan, pleaded guilty in 2018 to a lesser charge of facilitation of murder. A third suspect, Jason Autry, also pleaded guilty to his part and testified against Zach Adams.
In a petition for post-conviction relief filed in Hardin County Circuit Court, Adams’ attorney said Autry had completely recanted his testimony. Attorneys say Autry’s truthful testimony also provides the necessary alibi for Adams.
Bobo disappeared in 2011 from her home in Decatur County, and her remains were found three years later.
Autry was sentenced to eight years in prison but was released in 2020 because he had already served that time. Autry was indicted on a federal gun charge in 2021.
Dylan Adams was sentenced to 35 years as part of his plea agreement.
