MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The two victims in Monday’s fatal bus crash near Jackson, Tennessee have been taken to the Medical Examiner’s office in Nashville for positive identification.
One victim was a passenger on the bus, the Tennessee Highway Patrol says. There was no information provided by THP on the second victim.
THP says the Greyhound bus was traveling from Memphis to Nashville when it was involved in a crash with a passenger vehicle on Highway 70 In Madison County on Monday evening.
There were 39 people on the bus, and 33 sought medical attention, THP said. Those numbers differed slight from earlier totals provided by Greyhound.
THP says it has has completed its preliminary investigation of the crash and the mechanical systems of the bus. Witness interviews and evidence analysis will be conducted next before a report is compiled.
A person who was on the bus told WREG that they were on the way from Memphis to Nashville when the bus suddenly lost control along Highway 70. He said the bus collided with a pickup truck and landed in a ditch, trapping passengers inside.
Mehdi Kassam said one of the people who died in the crash was a passenger who was in a wheelchair at the front of the bus. A person in the pickup was able to get out safely, he said.
Greyhound says their team is actively investigating the situation and providing necessary assistance to passengers, the driver and law enforcement.
