WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tennessee Congressman David Kustoff (R-Memphis) is urging his fellow House lawmakers to quickly pass the Senate’s version of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

“This is a big important vote,” said Rep. Kustoff. “It’s going to be one of the most important things we do in the four years under Donald Trump. We need to get it done and get it passed.”
The original version of the bill, which passed the House back on May 22, made cuts to health care and nutrition programs to provide more funding for border security and defense. It also extended trillions of dollars in tax cuts.
But Democrats, including Congressman Steve Cohen, are calling the bill a “disaster” for the people of Memphis.
“It’s the worst imaginable bill you can have as a person living in Memphis,” said Rep. Cohen. “It strikes down a lot of people out of health care. 12 million Americans will lose their health care.”
Rep. Cohen also criticized the bill’s cuts to SNAP benefits and programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps low income individuals and families pay their utility bills.

“This is the rich getting away with unbelievable tax breaks,” said Rep. Cohen. “Hundreds of thousands of dollars for people, tax breaks while the poor get pennies on the day.”
The Senate version of the bill, which passed by a narrow margin on Tuesday, includes deeper cuts to Medicaid, a higher increase to the debt limit. It also removes a controversial 10-year moratorium on state laws to regulate artificial intelligence.
“The bill does cut a lot,” said Rep. Kustoff. “But the debt is approaching $37 trillion. That’s a lot of money and it’s unfathomable what we’re doing to our our children and our grandchildren.”
President Trump has urged Congress to pass the bill before July 4th.
“I still think we can get it done before July 4th and have it on President Trump’s desk,” said Rep. Kustoff. “But if it slips by a few days, I’m not that concerned about it.”
