MEMPHIS, Tenn. — James Rogers will not be reappointed as director of Memphis Animal Services, a spokeswoman for mayor-elect Jim Strickland said.
The city will do a regional and national search to find a replacement.
Memphis Animal Services was under heavy scrutiny this summer for a number of issues.
Rogers was given a five-day suspension after a pure-bred dog that appeared in a magazine article about adoption was euthanized right before the article was published.
Accidental euthanizations have been a recurring problem at MAS.
Also this summer, an inmate working at the shelter was charged with spraying toxic chemicals on two cats. One of the animals later died.
