Man wants justice for cousin after 2023 fatal shooting in Highland Heights

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Eric Prude’s 34-year-old cousin, Devetrus Jamerson, was shot to death in Highland Heights in August 2023.

On Aug. 13, police said they arrived on the scene and found Jamerson lying face down in the driveway at a home in the 3300 block of Hardin Avenue, inches away from his car. Police said he was fatally shot.

Police said a witness told them Jamerson was standing outside talking to a friend when they heard gunfire, and one of the bullets wounded him.

He was rushed to the hospital after being shot, and his family was unsure of his condition.

“We got a call from a person on the scene, and they said that he had been shot and that we needed to make our way around there,” said Prude.

When Jamerson’s family arrived at the hospital, the doctor broke the news that he had passed away.

“They said that they could not resuscitate,” said Prude.

Prude said that he wants people to know that his cousin was a good man.

“You are a coward, straight up and down ain’t no other way to put it,” said Prude to the shooters. “He was a hardworking man, somebody that you took from the community, not just his family, but the community.”
