‘It’s just darkness:’ Mother seeks justice for son fatally shot in front of his home

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mother is seeking justice for her son, who was shot to death in front of his home in 2020.

Cynthia Pulliam, the mother of 24-year-old Timothy Stephenson, has spent the last four and a half years praying that someone will come forward in her son’s death.

On July 12, 2020, Stephenson came over to his mother’s house for a visit. Pulliam says he was a well-known barber with a dream to take his skills to California.

“He came over and he kissed me on my head two times, and then I said, ‘Why are you kissing me like that? Get away from me, you are kissing me like you are kissing me goodbye,'” said Pulliam.

She said several hours later, after he left, she turned on the news to see that somebody had been shot.

Police responded to a shots-fired call in the 3500 block of Watauga just after 5 p.m. Officers found Stephenson face down lying in the front yard of his East Memphis home.

“When you lose a child, you go into this dark space, and there is nothing there. It’s just darkness,” said Pulliam.

Pulliam says someone had planned and orchestrated the death of her son, and after Stephenson was shot, the person took his clothes.

“When they found his body, he didn’t have on anything but his socks and boxers; they took his clothes,” said Pulliam.

Homicide detectives say the gunmen were seen getting in a white or light colored car with clear tape on the driver’s door.
