Arrest made after pedestrian killed on I-40

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A deadly hit-and-run on Interstate 40 in Cordova killed a pedestrian early Sunday morning, and police have made an arrest.

Juan Sanchez, 30, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence, after police say he took the license plate off his car and left.

Officers arrived at the scene at 4:46 a.m. after receiving a call that a pedestrian was struck at I-40 eastbound, west of Whitten Road.

When they arrived, they saw the male victim lying on the road and pronounced him dead at the scene.

A short distance away, they found a Toyota Corolla with front-end damage and no license plate, but no sign of the driver. They traced that car back to Sanchez.

Sanchez allegedly admitted to police he hit the pedestrian and removed the license plate from the vehicle without aiding the pedestrian.
