Memphis schools get xAI funds for infrastructure upgrades

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Shelby County Schools board has approved a donation from xAI to address maintenance issues at four schools in Whitehaven and Westwood, following a 7 to 2 vote on the proposal.

The donation from xAI will focus on improving infrastructure at John P. Freeman Optional School, Fairley High School, Mitchell High School, and Westwood High School.

This initiative comes as the district grapples with aging infrastructure across many of its buildings.

“If they want to invest in our children and families and their future workforce and the future leadership, I will not sleep tonight saying no to that,” said MSCS Board Member Amber Huett Garcia.

MSCS Board Member Keith Williams voiced concerns about potential air pollution impacts on the community.

“It’s going to have a very devastating effect on the health of that community, and if it does, if and when it does, the blood will be on the hands of this school system and those of you who are breaking it,” said Williams.

xAI’s commitment includes immediate action on HVAC systems, with inspections already completed and work set to begin the following day.

The company plans to collaborate with school leaders to prioritize other necessary improvements, such as plumbing, lighting, windows, and athletic facilities.

Brent Mayo of xAI emphasized the company’s dedication to community leadership, stating, “Being a leader in the community doesn’t just take money, it takes courage and commitment. We (the XAI team) are committed to all 3.”

With xAI’s involvement, the targeted schools in Whitehaven and Westwood are expected to see significant infrastructure improvements, addressing long-standing maintenance issues and enhancing the learning environment for students.
