MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The five former Memphis Police Officers convicted of federal charges in the death of Tyre Nichols will be sentenced this month.
According to court documents, Tadarrius Bean and Justin Smith, both found guilty of obstruction in the case, will appear in court for federal sentencing on June 16.
Demetrius Haley, found guilty on four counts in federal court, and Desmond Mills, who took a plea deal on the federal charges, are set to appear for sentencing on June 17.
Lastly, Emmitt Martin will stand in front of a judge on June 18. He also took a plea deal for the federal charges.
Bean, Smith, and Haley were acquitted of all state charges, including second-degree murder, in connection with the beating death of Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop in 2023. Mills and Martin also pleaded guilty to charges at the state level.
The traffic stop that led to Tyre Nichols’ death happened on Jan. 7, 2023. Video shows officers punching and kicking Nichols on the ground near his family’s southeast Memphis home. He died in a hospital three days later.
On Jan. 20, the five officers, Mills, Martin, Smith, Bean, and Haley, were fired.
Body camera and SkyCop video of the beating were released to the public Jan. 27. The Scorpion Unit the officers were part of was disbanded by MPD the next day.
On Oct. 2, 2024, a federal jury released a mixed verdict for the remaining officers, finding them guilty on some charges and not guilty on others. The state criminal trial for Bean, Smith, and Haley concluded on May 7, 2025.
