MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An 18-year-old was arrested Thursday morning in a shooting that killed a 93-year-old woman and injured two others more than a year ago.
Derrion Taylor is charged with First-Degree Murder, Two Counts of Attempted First Degree Murder, and Two Counts of Aggravated Assault. He was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals.
Victim Geraldine Harris was found dead in her home on Kendale Avenue in the Glendale neighborhood of Midtown on Jan. 17, 2024. Two other female victims had been shot as well, and were taken to hospitals with critical injuries.
Officers say the shooting started from a disagreement between a family member and two men.
Marshals said an investigation led to Taylor, who was 17 at the time of the shooting. A warrant for his arrest was issued Tuesday.
Taylor was taken into custody without incident around 8 a.m. Thursday at a house in the 3000 block of Colony Drive in Memphis.
Taylor’s arrest by the U.S. Marshals Service comes less than 12 hours after WREG aired an interview with the victims’ family members, who complained about the slow pace of justice in the case.
“Do something now, redouble your efforts, you can not allow this to happen. Do you want to wait until this young man kills somebody else?” said Ronald Harris, the victim’s son, in an interview a day before the arrest.
“I was relieved, I was very relieved, my sister in-law called me, my sister in-law who was actually shot and wounded, Memphis school teacher, called me and told that he had been arrested, so we were very pleased that happened,” said Harris on Thursday.
“We don’t feel justice yet. We don’t feel justice until this case runs its course, and unfortunately for this kid, he’s got to be taken off the street, and I want him taken off the street, he is a danger,” said Harris.
Harris says he would like the city of Memphis to step up and fix systemic problems happening with juvenile crime.
“At some point Derrion Taylor is going to get out of prison if he gets a long prison sentence, he is going to get out, and then what are we going to have? And I don’t want to see another family going through what my family is going through,” said Harris.
