MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An 18-year-old is now in jail after shots were fired at a delivery driver inside an American Deli on Thursday afternoon.
Malik Wills, 18, is charged with criminal attempt second-degree murder, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
Just after noon, officers say they responded to the American Deli on 3571 Lamar Avenue, where a male victim was found suffering from three gunshot wounds.
Video footage shows the victim picking up a Door Dash order from the front counter while a male was seen walking up behind him, according to police.
The suspect is accused of waiting until the victim walked past him and pulling out a gun, firing 10 shots at him.
Video shows customers at the restaurant diving over a bench to the ground and running away as the gunman fired shots and tussled on the floor with the victim, with another person sitting in the booth just inches away.
Police say the victim was able to get away when the suspect’s gun jammed. The suspect then ran from the scene.
Later that day, investigators say Malik Wills turned himself in to police and admitted to shooting the suspect.
Wills is due in court on June 23. His bond has yet to be set.
The victim in Thursday’s shooting was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Police have not revealed a possible motive.
The suspect, Wills, has been arrested three times in recent months.
Police say he was one of three people caught in a stolen car back in April. He was released on his own recognizance days later.
Last month, Wills was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after dozens of shots were fired at a home in East Memphis.
After a couple of days in jail, he was released again on a $50,000 bond.
