MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Search and rescue crews have recovered the body of a man from a pond in front of the Raleigh library.

Memphis police have identified the drowning victim as Michael Martindell, 46.

Police officers and firefighters began searching the pond at 3452 Austin Peay Highway after a Martindell was seen swimming in the reservoir Tuesday night.

Officers and firefighters searched the water for several hours, but due to limited visibility, they had to suspend the operation and resume the search this morning.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office also assisted and released pictures of the search. Martindell’s body was located around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

MPD said Martindell was seen jumping into the pond and swimming in the water. He went under the water and did not resurface.

MPD said their thoughts are with Martindell’s family members and loved ones.
