MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say two suspects, one of them a juvenile, robbed a gas station on Highland early Saturday, but were quickly caught after a K9 officer found one in a doghouse a few blocks away.

Around 1:15 a.m., police say the two walked into the Circle K at Highland and Southern, where the juvenile suspect told employees, “Y’all about to get robbed.”

The second suspect, identified as Carlos Steward, 18, allegedly pointed a gun at an employee and ordered her to give him money out of the register.

The employee placed a tracker inside the cash, police say. The suspects then ran west down Southern Avenue.

That tracker led police to the area of Spottswood and Haynes, where an officer spotted them. Police took the younger suspect into custody after a brief foot chase.

A police K9 officer found Steward hiding in a doghouse behind a house on Josephine Street. The dog “engaged” Steward on his left leg and armpit, police said.

Steward was taken to a hospital for medical clearance before his arrest. The juvenile’s mother was called to the scene before he was taken to a police station.

Officers say they found a black hoodie in a park nearby. Hanging from the pocket was a handgun with a 15-round magazine, as well as a face mask and sunglasses.

Steward is charged with aggravated robbery and evading arrest. Police say he admitted to participating in the robbery.
