MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A new reason to go out on the weekend or make a midweek dinner date.
Fawn, a farm-to-table, tapas-style restaurant, quietly opened its doors to the public Tuesday night. It’s one of three new restaurants in the Cooper-Young area.
Fawn is the creation of friends Paul Gilliam and Mary Oglesby, who also own the bars Cameo and Mary’s BOTE in Midtown.
It’s their biggest undertaking to date, but one they feel the most confident about because of their management team.
“It’s incredibly exciting, said Gilliam.” “We always said we weren’t going to open a restaurant, but sometimes the right opportunity, the right people kind of line up, and everything that is coming out of the kitchen is incredible.”
Gilliam and Ogelesby designed the restaurant with a cozy, woodsy vibe. They hope their rotating menu, internationally influenced cuisine, and small shareable plates will keep customers coming back for more.
“I really like going to the farmer’s market and seeing what is there that week. It’s really what inspires me, what makes it on the menu,” said Chef Theresa Schunke.”I have experience with a lot of different cuisines. So we are not just necessarily one type of cuisine. It’s all different kinds. There is definitely some southern Italian, some Middle Eastern, some Boska-style tapas. Things like that. So it’s just kind of a grab bag of everything that I love to eat.”
The same team plans to open the wine bar No Comment in the old Knifebird space on Central Avenue this summer.

Also new to the neighborhood is Cooper’s, which recently took over the old Café Ole building at Cooper and Young Avenue and the Japanese restaurant Nagoya House in the 2100 block of Young Avenue.


“It’s great to the staples in the neighborhood, the Beauty Shop, Alchemy, Tsunami, and the deli. All these legacy places, but it’s always nice to see new places pop up,” said Ogelsby. “It’s an untrue narrative that everything is closing. That’s just not true. Seeing all these new places open up is very nice.”
