MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A string of violent crimes plagued the Bluff City as Memphis Police responded to at least five shootings where at least five people have died, all within a span of seven hours.

The violence started shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and carried over into the early morning hours.

A man was shot and killed outside a fast food restaurant in Frayser. He was found at a McDonald’s on Thomas Street.

Just two hours later, officers responded to a Frayser Village Shopping Center on the corner of Frayser and Rangeline regarding a shooting and attempted carjacking.

Police say an armed man walked up to the driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle and fired at her multiple times. She was shot, but returned fire on the suspect. It is unclear if he was injured by gunfire.

According to the MPD, the woman is a security employee at the Ridgecrest Apartments. She was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

The MPD says the suspect was a “younger male” wearing a white shirt, black pants, and black shoes. He was carrying a backpack and was armed with a gun. He arrived at the shopping center on a bicycle.

A witness in the area told police the suspect held the woman at gunpoint and tried to force her to hand over her car keys. Police were also informed that the suspect is frequently at the Ridgecrest Apartments and has had multiple altercations with the victim.

An hour later, around 8 p.m., officers were called to a home for a deadly shooting on Cleoford Avenue. Police say two people were killed. One person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

WREG recently spoke with Memphis Mayor Paul Young after a separate deadly shooting. He says scenes like these are disheartening.

“It makes me angry, not going to tolerate it,” he says.

But just after midnight, more violence continued.

In South Memphis, around 12:20 a.m., another shooting was reported in the 1400 block of South Wellington Street. A man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Just 10 minutes later, officers were in Whitehaven for another shooting.

The shooting took place at a gas station in the 4900 block of Airways Boulevard, just south of East Shelby Drive. A man was also pronounced dead on the scene.

No suspect information has been released in most of these shootings, but this is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
