MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The officer whose Memphis Police squad car ended up on its roof in the parking lot of a Southwind apartment complex will not be cited in the wreck, MPD said.

Officer Cary A. Taylor lost control of the squad car and overturned in a parking lot of the Lincoln on the Green apartment complex in the Southwind area on Tuesday, the Memphis Police Department said.

The marked police vehicle hit a curb, then hit another curb, a tree, and then hit an unoccupied parked red Volvo C70.

Police say Taylor was not responding to a call and was not in emergency mode when the crash took place.

“The crash took place on private property, and as such, a citation will not be issued,” an MPD public information officer said in an email Wednesday.

It’s unclear how fast Taylor was driving in the parking lot, whether he was pursuing a suspect or suspicious activity, or exactly how his car ended up upside-down. Memphis Police say they are still investigating.

The owner of the red Volvo told WREG that he was at work when the crash occurred, and when he came home to look for his car it was gone.

The Volvo owner said he later learned it was towed to the Memphis Police impound lot, where they take wrecked vehicles.

There is no word on whether he will be compensated for damages to his car.

“It was literally like a full-blown impact, like I said, it kind of heard like a gunshot, like I thought it was a gunshot,” said Viper McCallen, witness.

“It’s crazy because he came from a dead stop like not even 200 feet back and just fully gunned it,” said McCallen.

“The officer seemed fine, he was sitting on the curb,” said McCallen. “He got pulled out the car like they took him to the hospital, but he seemed like he was coherent for the most part.”

No further details are available for release at this time, police said.
