MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead and another is in critical condition following a shooting at an apartment complex in Raleigh.

The incident happened in the 4400 block of Cedar Glenn Drive a little after 3 a.m. Officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

One man was pronounced dead on the scene. The other was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

Police say that preliminary information suggests that the suspects were breaking into a residence.

Neighbors, Mallorie Haley and Van Buford say they heard it all.

“We heard about 15 rounds of gunshots, they were really close. We stay in the apartments next door,” the neighbors said. “It was just loud, we jumped up immediately and he heard the dude was like get away from here, get away from here. He said they are trying to break into my house. And that’s when we heard another guy screaming help, help.”

Another resident said he saw several Memphis Police officers, crime scene tape, and forensics within the apartment complex while he was taking his son to the bus stop.

“It surprises me that it happened over here because as long as I have been living over here I have never seen a police car ride through this apartment complex — never,” Slim said.

According to the Memphis Data Hub, there have been 40 homicides so far this year and 28 incidents in the area including assault and robbery.

Slim believes the reason for Memphis’ crime is poverty.

“You don’t know where you are going to get your next meal from, you don’t know where you are going to get your money from, you don’t know how you are going to survive,” Slim said. “That’s why crime is so high because we got to do what they got to do. Rob people, kill people, do whatever to survive, to feed their family, or themselves.”

He says it’s time for residents and leaders to stop talking and start doing.

“They want to take a stand or pay attention to when different nationally kill us or when police kill us, we want to take a stand on that but why are we not taking a stand when we kill each other?” Slim said. “Come out and visit. Talk to the residents, talk to the people in the community that’s all show them that you are concerned about the way we are living.”

This remains an ongoing investigation.
