MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Light, Gas and Water utility company is encouraging residents to reduce their electricity usage because of extremely high temperatures.
All of the Mid-South is under a heat advisory until Friday, and temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-90s.
MLGW said in a release that the Tennessee Valley Authority has launched its Emergency Load Curtailment Program because of high temperatures, and local power companies across the TVA system are asking residents to use less electricity.
They said they aim to help reduce strain on the grid to avoid interruptions altogether.
They are not experiencing outages currently, and no service interruptions are planned.
Ways to help reduce the usage of electricity are the following:
- Turn off unnecessary lights
- Raise your thermostat a few degrees, if health allows. Wait until later tonight to run washing machines or dryers
- Limit electric vehicle charging to off-peak hours if possible.
The utility company said it will update customers if needed.
