100-degree heat scorches Memphis area , relief soon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The summer heat created some uncomfortable conditions in the Mid-South on Tuesday.

Memphis hit the 100-degree mark for the first time this year, and an extreme heat warning was in effect throughout the day.

A construction crew doing brick work on a building in the 300 block of South Main worked well into the afternoon despite the conditions.

The men joked that it wasn’t that hot and were doing their best to stay hydrated.

While several workers stood on scaffolding near the top of the building, another worker on the ground filled a bucket with water bottles, which they then pulled up.

Hot weather safety was also the name of the game at a back-to-school baseball camp at Hernando High School.

Organizers of the three-day camp decided to readjust the start time from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to keep the kids out of the sweltering heat.

Hernando High Baseball Coach Taylor Karr said the young players are also taking lots of breaks during the two-hour camp.

“We try to have after each twenty segments we are going to take a water break, and then halfway through we do a water plus a popsicle break because every kid loves a good popsicle,” said Karr.

Nearly 60 campers, from first grade to seventh grade, had the opportunity to try out the high school’s new baseball field and improve their game. Coach Karr said they also tell the kids to stop playing if they aren’t feeling well.

“You don’t have to be the tough kid. Like, this is heat that grown folks are struggling in,” Karr said. “We try to watch their body language. Watch, you know, if they start to get quieter or start to wable around, we definitely want to get them in some shade and some water as quick as we can.”

The Mid-South is expected to get some relief from the heat by Friday, when highs will drop to the mid-80s.
