McDonald’s employee steals customer’s card, makes charges at Best Buy, police say

Note: Police later corrected the location of the McDonald’s

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police say a McDonald’s employee took pictures of a customer’s card and made four transactions within 30 minutes of checking him out.

Antwuan Brown is charged with two counts of Theft of Property, Identity Theft, and Illegal Possession of a Credit Card.

On February 24, the victim placed an order in the drive-thru of McDonald’s on South Highland Street near Spottswood.

About 30 minutes after leaving McDonald’s, he began receiving notifications that his debit card was being used.

MPD says Brown made four transactions with BestBuy.com, totaling $1,496.93. Three of the charges were denied, but a payment of $263.39 was accepted.

On March 1, investigators watched a video which allegedly showed Brown taking photos of the victim’s debit card in the drive-thru.

The Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South says to always be aware of where your card is and who has it. They also say to consider paying with cash, using a restaurant app, and when you have time paying inside the restaurant.

“I’d be really leery this day and time to physically give my card to somebody, especially in the drive-thru. Sometimes it’s unavoidable. Make sure you’re checking those account statements as quickly as possible. As soon as you see a problem, alert your bank or your credit card because this escalates very quickly,” said Daniel Irwin, with the Better Business Bureau.

Antwuan Brown is set to appear in court on Tuesday.

WREG did reach out to McDonald’s corporate and regional offices for comment. Michael Retzer Sr., McDonald’s Owner/ Operator, sent a response Wednesday:

“We take credit card fraud seriously and are fully cooperating with the Memphis Police Department. This is unacceptable behavior and does not reflect the values of our organization. We offer our deepest apologies to the customer impacted, as we are committed to always putting our customers first.”
