MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is now in jail after police say he was involved in a carjacking at a gas station in Messick Buntyn where he kidnapped a 14-year-old and held him for ransom on Sunday.
Cordarius Johnson, 24, is charged with aggravated robbery, carjacking, especially aggravated kidnapping, assault on first responder, and resisting official detention.

Officers say it all started when they responded to a report of a kidnapping for ransom in the 3200 block of Carnes Avenue.
A woman told police she was looking after her friend’s 14-year-old son and that during that time he went out with her nephew. The nephew returned to the home on foot stating that he had been carjacked and that the 14-year-old had been kidnapped.
The nephew says the suspects took $600 from him and his cell phone.
Shortly afterward, the woman says she received a video call from the 14-year-old with an AR-15 firearm barrel to his head. The suspects were demanding $1,000 cash in exchange for the boy’s return.
Police say they watched video footage from the Valero gas station on 853 South Highland Street where the carjacking and kidnapping took place. The suspect’s vehicle was identified as a black Acura.
Surveillance videos showed the Acura and the nephew’s silver Honda Sedan leaving the gas station lot together. That is when the nephew was allegedly thrown out of the vehicle near Greer Street and Carnes Avenue.
Police say they spotted the two vehicles in a driveway on Tillman Street along with the three males seen on the gas station video. The males reportedly started running when they saw the officers.
Two of them got away, but Cordarius Johnson was taken into custody. Johnson is accused of resisting being handcuffed and fighting a Memphis Police Officer by kicking him in the leg.
The 14-year-old was found in the passenger seat of the Acura.
Johnson told police he was driving the Acura at the gas station but denied being involved in the kidnapping, robbery, and carjacking.
Cordarius Johnson is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning. His bond has yet to be set.
