Officers responded at 8:15 p.m. to a shooting at College Street and Ferry Court.

A male victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Sunday morning, MPD reported that the victim died at the hospital.

“To be honest with you, we are not holding up very well,” said Theodore Simpson, dad of Joseph Simpson.

“I got a phone call saying my son just got shot, and he is laying on the ground, so I said to them call the police, call the ambulance. They say no we called you first, no call them,” said Simpson.

Simpson said his son graduated from Trezavant High School and was changing his life.

“When I say he actually changed his life, he was going different places with the church. He started doing all these other things, and he even has a picture with Governor Bill Haslam,” said Simpson.

Simpson said that the family was just celebrating a birthday two days before the fatal shooting.

“There are so many times that he has made us all laugh. You know, unfortunately, now we’re all crying. So we are going to really miss him; he was well loved,” said Simpson.

Joseph’s family has set up a GoFundMe to help with burial expenses.
