MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are investigating after a man was found shot to death in Orange Mound Wednesday.

Police say officers responded to a man-down call at Spottswood Avenue near Buntyn Street at 12:56 p.m. Officers found the man suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

But people who live nearby believe he was actually shot the night before and was just discovered lifeless in a car near a church around 1 p.m.

His death drew out dozens of people who are angry about the crime in their community. We spoke to members of Guns Down in Orange Mound at a park just around the corner from the shooting.

“I’m disappointed because it’s like life means nothing,” said member Esther Jones.

The nonprofit is making it a mission to bring positivity to the historic area. They make it their mission to connect with young people and families by doing everything from rehabbing Orange Mound Park to community clean-ups, and many other events.

“There’s somebody out here that they can come to. They can talk to us. We could pray with them,” said member Jackie Holland.

While they do what they can, they encourage others to also step up to curb violence in other parts of the city too.

“I can talk to the people in my neighborhood that know me and respect me and for the other neighborhoods I tell them to do the same. There’s people in every neighborhood that people look up to and when everybody gets out there in their own neighborhood and start doing stuff, you know what we gonna do? We gonna save Memphis,” Jones said.
