MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Haywood County High student faces up to 74 years in prison for the shooting that killed a 16-year-old honor student and wounded a 13-year-old.
Kevion Davis was convicted by a jury Tuesday on charges of second-degree murder in the death of Christine Michael in 2023, the district attorney’s office for Haywood County said.

He was also found guilty on three counts of attempted second-degree murder, three counts of possession of a firearm in a dangerous felony, three counts of assault and felony reckless endangerment.
Davis, who was 18 at the time of the shooting, will be sentenced Oct. 27. His co-defendant Bishop Owens, who was then 16, will be tried April 7, 2026.
The shooting happened Feb. 10, 2023 after a basketball game at Ripley High School.
Officials say Davis pursued a vehicle with four teenagers inside, including Michael, from Ripley to Brownsville, as Owens shot at them multiple times. Michael was shot in the back and died from a gunshot wound.
Michael was a straight-A student and president of her class at Haywood High. She had no connection to whatever led to the shooting, Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett said at the time. Davis and Owens were on the school’s football team.
