MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man is charged with sex trafficking, aggravated assault and especially aggravated kidnapping after a woman told police he beat her and tried to make her have sex with men.

Fred Buford, 31, was arrested Sunday and is jailed on $350,000 bond. Police said he is a convicted felon, and also charged him with being in possession of a firearm.

Officers were called to the 4300 block of American Way on Sunday.

When they arrived, a woman told them Buford had attempted to make her have sex for money over the previous two days, both by walking in areas known for prostitution and through online ads.

The victim said she was unsuccessful, and Buford got angry, beating her her with a pistol and a broom and telling her she could not leave until she made some money.

A 17-year-old girl was also in the room, and corroborated the victim’s statement, police said.

Police also found an online ad with the victim, and cellphone messages between Buford and the victim.
