MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Parts of Shelby County and Memphis can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on Friday night.

Deputies tell WREG they’re focused on making communities safer as Memphis continues to deal with gun violence.

For weeks and months, WREG has reported on gun violence that has resulted in death, trauma and grief.

Law enforcement told WREG they hear the pleas for change, and they’re doing something about it.

On Friday night, deputies and police officers will monitor the northern areas of Shelby County, as well as parts of Frayser and Raleigh.

“We’re going to have deputies who will be flying drones, so we’ll have aerial surveillance. But then, we’re also going to have deputies on the ground,” said Anthony Buckner, Chief Deputy, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. “We also have K9 deputies that’s going to be out here tonight. And so, we’re looking for anything and everything that’s a violation of law that’s in this community.”

Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner says it’s part of a crime-fighting operation that aims to capture criminals and protect the community.

“We’re always out doing operations like this. Tonight, we’ve just done an enhanced operation,” said We’ve had several shootings in the last couple of weeks in the part of Frayser that borders us and some of the areas up here in the county,” said Derek Mills, Assistant Chief Deputy, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

For weeks now, deadly gun violence has taken a toll on the Frayser community. Deputies tell WREG they choose specific locations, based on crime data and numbers.

“If you cannot find the right program, that will help you change your life. We will find the right program that will put you behind bars,” said Chief Deputy Buckner.
