SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The Southaven Police Department says human remains were discovered at Central Park on Sunday.
According to reports, police responded to Central Park on Sunday afternoon after receiving a call about possible human remains in the area.
The Desoto County Coroner collected the remains, which will be sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab for further testing.
The park was closed on Monday as they continued to process the scene but reopened before 1 p.m.
“We’ve been here for 20 years. This is the first time we’ve ever had an incident like this,” said Kim McNeil, a Southaven resident who usually walks her dog in the park during her morning routine. “I didn’t realize that was going on.”
Other people in the community like Meagan Chastant-Qualls say the discovery is something she never would have imagined could happen in of all places, Central Park.
She says the park is right next door to the FNP MidSouth Integrative Medical Clinic where she works.
“Word on the street seems to be that we had some Frisbee golf goers and they were in the middle of their game,” she said. “Somebody reached down to pick up their Frisbee and that’s when they actually discovered human remains.”
That information has not been confirmed by Southaven Police who cleared the scene. But the remains were reportedly found in a drainage ditch near a rotted tree.
“We’d love to know if this was something that happened in our backyard or if it was aftermath of something that happened farther away,” Chastant-Qualls said.
