Bolton High football player who collapsed during practice has died

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Bolton High School student athlete who collapsed during football practice earlier this month has died, his family said Sunday.

Sixteen-year-old Joshua Henderson had been at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital since July 7. His parents said he collapsed in the heat during football practice.

“By the time I got there, he’s in the back of an ambulance, lethargic, unconscious, no eyes open and barely able to breathe,” said Angel Henderson, mother.

His family says that while practice was held in the morning, temperatures were still high, and that their son had perfect health.

In the update posted to the GoFundMe page Sunday, his parents and aunt said Joshua died on Saturday.

“It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Joshua. After bravely fighting for his life in the hospital, Josh transitioned 7/26 due to complications from organ failure caused by a severe heat stroke,” the family said.

“Josh was only 16 years old, full of life, laughter, and promise. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, extended family, and all who knew him. His sudden loss has left our hearts shattered and our world forever changed.”

The family said his GoFundMe, which had raised $3,450 by Sunday afternoon, was shifting to cover funeral and burial expenses.

MSCS released the following statement after Joshua’s death:

He was not only an exceptional athlete and dedicated scholar, but also a source of light and joy to all who knew him. His kindness, determination, and positive spirit left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and our entire BHS community.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all those grieving this immense loss. Though his time with us was far too short, his legacy will live on in the lives he touched. We will honor him by continuing to uplift one another, to lead with compassion, and to cherish every moment we have together.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools expressed their sympathy for the family, saying in a statement, “He was not only an exceptional athlete and dedicated scholar, but also a source of light and joy to all who knew him. His kindness, determination, and positive spirit left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and our entire BHS community.”
